The BCCI has already appointed Rohit Sharma as the Indian captain for the three-match ODI series in January 2022 on a tour of South Africa, but the full details of the squad have not been announced yet. With bio-bubble and workload management in mind, it remains to be seen how many players the selectors will select in the squad for the 50-over tournament.

The battle between Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shikhar Dhawan:-

Ruturaj Gaikwad has played in two T20 internationals in Sri Lanka so far. But he has not got a chance in ODIs yet. Even in the three-match T20 International against New Zealand, Rohit Sharma did not get a place as he batted first and Ishant Kishan was his starting partner.

Ruturaj Gaikwad has scored 136 runs against Madhya Pradesh, 154 runs against Chhattisgarh, and 124 runs against Kerala, which will be hard to ignore by the selectors. Shikhar Dhawan, on the other hand, has scored only zero, 12, 14, 18 runs during this period.

Meanwhile, Indian Coach Rahul Dravid has given a chance to senior players like Ajinkya Raghane and Ishant Sharma in Test matches and it seems that Shikhar Dhawan may be given this opportunity again. "The last time India played in a 50-over series, Shikhar Dhawan led India to a match-winning innings in Sri Lanka. He is agile and good at amassing runs. The BCCI sources said that they think this will give Shikhar  Dhawan one last chance.
